When Antonio and Fernanda Machado immigrated to Canada from northern Portugal in 1979, they could not have imagined the incredible path their lives would take. The couple had aspirations to create a new life for their family in the Chatham-Kent area, but like many new Canadians, it took years of hard work and dedication to reach their dreams. Antonio and Fernanda took jobs as labourers at two different factories, putting in long hours in their respective roles. They also spent countless hours volunteering at the Portugese Club in Chatham, maintaining a connection to their homeland while giving back to their new community here in Ontario.
Over time, their dreams for the future began to centre on a specific goal: to open a restaurant that showcased their Portugese heritage and their family’s love for food. In 2006, their vision became a reality and CBH & Grille Churrascaria opened its doors for the first time. It’s since become a pillar of the local restaurant community, offering incredible dishes and ambiance that have kept customers coming back for years.
Bringing European flair to Chatham-Kent
From the Mediterranean taste of Portugal to the mouth-watering taste of the authentic Churrascaria Steakhouse, CBH & Grille offered the community a new dining experience. CBH offers continental breakfast as well as exceptional lunch and dinner dishes. They are known for their steak and Portuguese chicken as well as amazing desserts and wine selection.
Not only is the restaurant owned by Antonio and Fernanda, it’s now led by their son, executive chef Brian Machado. It’s a true family affair and a wonderful part of the Chatham small business and foodservice community.
Giving back to their community
The Machado family built a new life and grew a successful business here in Chatham, and they’ve never stopped giving back. To date, they’ve supported Rock Missions by providing hot soup twice a week. This soup goes directly to homeless individuals in the community, offering them a warm, nutritious meal.
CBH also supports Chatham Kent Goodfellows by donating the proceeds from their breakfast service for three days in December. They also provide a daily lunch program to the local Alzheimer Society and are the main supporter of the annual ‘Christmas in Muskoka’ fundraiser. Along with our team here at Morton, CBH runs a ham giveaway in support of the less fortunate. This takes place as part of the GIFT event in Chatham, which took place on November 21st this year.
Finally, CBH and the Machado family have supported frontline workers at the CKHA hospital, local nursing homes, the CK Fire department, police department, paramedics and more. They are true leaders in the community, and we’re proud to call them a Morton client.
Great food, great people
CBH Grille and Churrascaria is a wonderful example of good people doing good things in the community—and making great food while they’re at it. We encourage you to try a meal from CBH if you haven’t already. Believe us, it won’t be the last time!
Thanks to the Machado family for all they do for the Chatham Kent community. You’ve built a fantastic restaurant from the ground up and through your charity work, you continue to be an inspiration to others.
